Recycling

Why Recycle More?

  • Landfill is environmentally damaging.

  • Landfill space is running out

  • Landfill charges are going through the roof

  • Essex residents said no to incineration

The New System

The improvements to the recycling service are part of a big overhaul of waste collection methods.

In order to increase recycling which will be necessary to avoid high landfill charges, the District Council has introduced wheelie bins for residual waste in Chigwell and Lambourne on an alternate week collection basis.

As a result the last collection in Chigwell of dry recyclables produced a 50% increase from 24 tonnes to 36.

We expect this to rise even further to 50 tonnes as the residents get use to the change. Glass collection in Chigwell has also increased considerably.

The new system will be rolled out over the district in stages. Chigwell and Lambourne already have wheelie bins, Waltham Abbey will start the two week cycle in Febrauray with the Ongar area probably be last in implementating the changes in the late part of 2006.

Curb Side Recycling

Epping Forest residents can now recycle plastic bottles alongside their paper and tin cans. And the district's many gardeners will get a green waste service all year round.

LOCAL Conservatives are under fire for spreading misleading information about big fines for people who produce too much waste for the wheelie bin system. The council has not agreed to implement any system of new fines.

If people do produce too much waste they will receive information and advice on how to recycle their rubbish. Households which can't avoid producing large amounts of non-recyclable waste can request an extra-large bin. Any decision to implement fines for people who abuse the system will only be made after the council's nine member 'Cabinet' (which contains four Conservatives, two Lib Dems, one Loughton Resident, one Labour member, and one Conservative backed Independent) has considered a formal report.
